Peter emigrated to Canada after completing his apprenticeship as a metal fabricator in Austria. Over the years he has taught himself other ways of using steel.
He worked for one of the finest wrought iron establishments in Toronto for several years creating custom furniture for many exclusive residences throughout Ontario. He also worked on furnishings and railings for the Ontario Pavilion at Expo ‘67, Sutton Place Hotel, and Famous Players Theaters.
Later he moved to Burlington to raise his family, and worked as a machine fitter for many years.
The saying “I’ve turned over a new leaf” is very true for Peter. In September 2000, he was asked to make a candleholder for a large candle. He wanted this design to be special and while out for a walk he saw a catalpa tree with very large leaves and chose to make that same leaf out of steel.
After seeing Peter’s work, a well-known artist blacksmith said: “Peter puts life into the steel!” Being a lover of nature he imitates reality in every leaf and vine.
Over the past few years, Peter has been able to devote much of his time to creating artistic and functional furnishings and accessories, which can be used for the home or garden. Wrought iron does not have to be the usual black curved steel; a touch of nature refines it.
Each piece is skillfully crafted to reveal the many colours and textures associated with various types of metal. Some of his work incorporates wood, stone, and glass. All his pieces are signed.
Peter has designed components to complement the work of various artists including Shirley Elford, a renowned worker in glass.
He appeared as a guest artist on the Sue Warden CraftScapes show and he has been featured in local publications. Peter's work can be found in private collections internationally. He is a member of the Ontario Artist Blacksmith Association.
Peter’s philosophy is to bring life to steel. He believes in producing quality one-of-a-kind works of art rather than mass production.
Whatever your taste or budget, Peter would be happy to help you find an original that will bring you enjoyment for many years to come. Peter can be reached at contact@artistryiniron.ca or at 905-336-2418.
